Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk (Just 2 Ingredients!)
Ever gone to make a recipe—like lemon slice, caramel, or fudge—and realized you’re out of sweetened condensed milk? Or maybe you're trying to avoid the canned version with additives and want something simpler, cleaner, and homemade. This recipe is exactly that. It’s rich, creamy, naturally sweet, and so satisfying to make from scratch.
Perfect for baking, caramel-making, or even stirring into your coffee for a cozy treat. Plus, it uses just two ingredients(with a pinch of salt if you like), and you’ll get at least 400g—plenty for most recipes.
Ingredients:
4 cups whole milk (or any full-fat milk of your choice)
1⅓ cups sugar (white, raw, or coconut sugar all work)
Pinch of salt (optional)
Instructions:
In a medium saucepan, combine the milk and sugar over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar fully dissolves.
Once dissolved, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
The milk will reduce by about half, thicken slightly, and darken a bit in color.
Once it reaches a thick, syrupy consistency (keep in mind it will thicken more as it cools), remove from heat and stir in a pinch of salt if desired.
Allow it to cool completely before transferring to a clean jar or airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Yields:
Approximately 400g (1¼ cups) of homemade sweetened condensed milk.
Recipe Notes:
For a dairy-free version, use full-fat coconut milk in place of regular milk.
You can adjust the sweetness slightly by using a bit less sugar, though the consistency may vary.
Great for recipes like caramel slice, fudge, or anywhere you'd use canned condensed milk—but with a homemade touch!
