Homemade Mince and Cheese Pie (Kiwi Classic)
There’s something deeply comforting about a classic mince and cheese pie—flaky pastry, rich and hearty filling, and that perfect balance of savory flavors. But when you make it from scratch with wholesome ingredients, it takes this humble dish to a whole new level. This version is packed with veggies, slow-simmered in bone broth for added nourishment, and can be easily adapted to suit your pantry staples.
Why Make It from Scratch?
Store-bought mince pies often contain preservatives, refined oils, and unnecessary additives. When you make your own, you control the ingredients, ensuring a healthier, more flavorful meal for your family.
Ingredients:
Makes 10-12 Party Sized Pies or one family sized
1 onion, finely chopped
1 carrot, grated
1 zucchini, or celery stalk grated
3 cloves garlic, minced
500g beef mince (or any ground meat of choice)
500ml bone broth (for added depth and nutrition)
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 tbsp coconut aminos (or Worcestershire sauce)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (optional, for thickening)
Cheese of choice (measure with the heart)
Puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)
1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
Instructions:
Sauté the Veggies – In a pan over medium heat, sauté the onion until soft. Add the grated carrot, zucchini, and minced garlic, cooking for a few more minutes until fragrant.
Brown the Mince – Add the beef mince, breaking it apart as it cooks. Let it brown evenly before stirring in the tomato paste, coconut aminos (or Worcestershire sauce), salt, and pepper.
Simmer with Bone Broth – Pour in the bone broth and let the mixture simmer until the liquid reduces and thickens. 15-25 min If it’s still too runny, stir in the cornstarch slurry and let it cook for another couple of minutes until it reaches the desired consistency.
Assemble the Pie – Roll out the pastry and line a pie dish or create individual hand pies. Fill with the mince mixture, then sprinkle cheese over the top. Cover with another layer of pastry, seal the edges, and brush with beaten egg for a golden finish.
Bake – Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crisp.
Serve & Enjoy – Let the pie cool slightly before slicing. Serve with a fresh side salad or steamed greens.
Tips & Variations:
Swap the bone broth for regular stock if needed, but bone broth adds extra nutrients and depth.
Use any cheese you love—cheddar, gouda, or even a mix for extra flavor.
